Explore Howard: Financial literacy game on the money for teens
Teens and their parents are the target audience for a money management event in Columbia Dec. 12.
The free event is designed to teach youth about financial matters through an interactive, game-style program.
The program, dubbed the first-annual Passport to Financial Literacy-Howard County, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6695 Dobbin Road, in Columbia.
Participants will choose an occupation and learn about taxes, bank accounts, paying bills, budgeting, car buying, housing, credit, saving, identity theft and more. The program will include cash prizes and other incentives.
The program is designed for students in middle and high school. Parents are to participate in the program alongside their children. It is being organized by Marlena Jareaux, a Realtor and author of the book "26 Financial Things to Teach Your Parents."
